Job Purpose
To deliver high-quality teaching and learning in English Language and Literature that inspires, motivates, and challenges students to achieve their full potential. The role involves developing learners’ skills in reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking through engaging lessons and creative approaches to learning.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons in English Language and English Literature across assigned key stages (e.g., KS3, KS4, and/or KS5).
Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and resources aligned with national curriculum and exam board specifications (e.g., AQA, Edexcel, OCR).
Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of learners with diverse abilities, backgrounds, and learning styles.
Mark and assess students’ work in line with school policies, providing timely, constructive feedback to support progress.
Track and monitor student achievement, identifying underperformance and implementing appropriate interventions.
Foster a love of reading, writing, and language through creative teaching methods and enrichment activities.
Contribute to the wider life of the school through extracurricular opportunities such as debating clubs, creative writing groups, or literacy initiatives.
Maintain a safe, respectful, and stimulating learning environment.
Participate in departmental meetings, school improvement initiatives, and professional development activities.
Uphold the school’s values, policies, and commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of students.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
A degree in English Language, English Literature, or a closely related field.
A recognized teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, QTS, QTLS, or equivalent).
Demonstrated experience teaching English at secondary or post-16 level.
Sound knowledge of curriculum content, assessment methods, and literacy development strategies.
Excellent classroom management and communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
Experience teaching both GCSE and A-Level English (Language and/or Literature).
Experience supporting students with additional learning needs or English as an Additional Language (EAL).
Familiarity with digital learning tools and technology-enhanced teaching.
Experience contributing to curriculum development or exam preparation.
Proven record of achieving high student outcomes and engagement.
