SEN Teaching Assistant – SEMH & Challenging Behaviour (Secondary School) 📍 Location: Secondary School near Stanmore Tube Station North West London 📅 Start Date: September 2026 🕒 Contract: Full-time, Monday–Friday (5 days per week) 📄 Type: Long-term / Academic Year (potential to extend) About the Role A welcoming and inclusive secondary school near Stanmore is seeking a committed SEN Teaching Assistant to join their SEN department from September 2026. This is a full-time, 1:1 support role working primarily with students in Years 9 and 10 who present with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including challenging behaviour and school avoidance. This is not a passive support role — it requires someone who can build genuine, trusting relationships with older students who may have had difficult experiences in education, and who has the resilience and skills to show up consistently for young people who don't always make it easy. If you thrive on building rapport with hard-to-reach students and feel equipped to support them through dysregulation, disengagement, and low school confidence, this could be a brilliant fit. Key Responsibilities - Provide consistent 1:1 support to Year 9 and 10 students with identified SEMH needs across the full school day - Build and maintain trusted, boundaried relationships with students who may be resistant to adult support or have a history of school avoidance - Implement de-escalation and emotional regulation strategies to support students during moments of heightened distress or challenging behaviour - Accompany students to lessons and support access to the curriculum across a range of subjects - Work collaboratively with class teachers to adapt tasks and reduce barriers to engagement - Support the reintegration or gradual engagement of students who are reluctant attenders or school refusers - Implement strategies outlined in EHCPs and SEMH support plans - Liaise with the SENCO, pastoral team, and wider SEN staff regarding student progress, incidents, and wellbeing concerns - Maintain accurate records of behaviour, progress, and any safeguarding observations - Encourage independence and self-regulation while providing appropriate scaffolding and reassurance Person Specification - Experience supporting students with SEMH needs in a secondary school setting (essential) - Demonstrable experience working with challenging behaviour and/or school avoiders - Confident working with older secondary students (Y9–10) who may present with resistance, low trust, or emotional dysregulation - Strong understanding of the distinction between deliberate defiance and emotional dysregulation, and how to respond accordingly - Calm, consistent, and boundaried — able to be a safe, reliable presence for vulnerable young people - Skilled in relationship-building with students who actively push adults away - Resilient and self-aware, with the ability to manage the emotional demands of this type of role - Experience with or knowledge of trauma-informed practice, positive behaviour support, or similar frameworks (desirable) - Team Teach trained or Mental Health First Aid qualified (desirable, not essential) - Ability to work closely with teaching staff and contribute to a joined-up support approach How to Apply Send your CV to Elise at elise.albonese@zeneducate.com and include a short note on your most relevant experience — particularly any work you've done with SEMH students or young people with challenging behaviour. 😊

How do I interview? Do I have to come to your office?

To make sure you're getting bookings perfect for you, we will invite you to a 30-minute online interview with our team to learn about your experience, preferences and why you're passionate about working in education. You can do this through any smartphone or computer. If you'd prefer to interview in person at our office, just let us know. Recent regulation changes require us to see your documents for your right to work in the UK in person. This takes no more than 5 minutes, dropping by our offices in London or Manchester.

We'll need evidence of your identity, right to work and teaching qualifaction. In addition, we'll need an enhanced DBS certificate and references from two recent previous employers.

Can you apply for a DBS for me?

Yes. If you need a DBS or your DBS needs updating we can apply for one fore you. The cost of a DBS is £47.20 which we will reimburse once you have worked 10 days through Zen.

I don't have my documents right now. Can I still sign up?

Yes! You can sign up now and let us know what work you're looking for. You can return at any time to finish your profile and start getting bookings.

I don't have recent references, can I still sign up?

You can definitely still sign up! Once you've uploaded your CV, we'll be able to look at your experience, and help you figure out who would be best placed to act as your referees.

How much work is there?

Generally speaking, we have consistently high demand for daily supply teachers in Greater London, Manchester Birmingham, Bristol and Leeds. Teaching assistant work is generally higher for long-term roles rather than daily supply cover.

Do you have primary, secondary or nursery jobs?

Yes. We can help with daily supply and long-term jobs in nurseries, primary schools and secondary schools. We don't typically have jobs in further education or college.

Do you have work for cover supervisors, invigilators, or school administrators?

While the majority of our work is for teachers and teaching assistants, we do also have work for cover supervisors and invigilators. Explain what you are looking for when you sign up and our team will help you.
