Our Academy in Blackpool is seeking a passionate, creative and committed Art Teacher to join our dynamic and forward-thinking school community. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality art education to students across Key Stages 3 and 4, inspiring creativity, facilitating personal growth, and developing both technical skills and critical understanding of art and design. You will contribute to the broader vision of the Academy by embedding leadership, high expectations, and inclusive practice across your teaching, and by nurturing students’ confidence, resilience, and artistic identity.
You will be part of a collaborative department, working with colleagues to enhance the art curriculum, and engage students through innovative projects, exhibitions, and cross-disciplinary opportunities. Key Responsibilities
- As an Art Teacher at Highfield Leadership Academy, your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- Planning and Delivering Effective Lessons
- Design, prepare, and deliver well-sequenced and engaging art & design lessons aligned with national curriculum and exam specifications (e.g. GCSE, BTEC, AQA, OCR, or equivalent).
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners (including SEND, EAL, high achievers, and those needing extra support).
- Incorporate a variety of mediums, techniques, and technologies (e.g. drawing, painting, sculpture, print, digital media, mixed media) to broaden students’ artistic experience.
Assessment, Feedback and Progress Monitoring
-Use assessment for learning (AfL) strategies, formal assessments, and formative feedback to monitor student progress.
- Set clear objectives and success criteria, track progress against those, and adapt teaching accordingly.
- Provide constructive feedback, and support students to reflect, improve, and develop their artistic voice.
Curriculum Development and Enrichment
- Contribute to the development, review, and improvement of the art curriculum, schemes of work, and resource planning.
- Develop enrichment opportunities (e.g. art clubs, workshops, competitions, exhibitions, community art projects, trips to galleries/museums).
Classroom Management and Student Engagement
- Create a stimulating, safe, and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning and creativity.
- Establish and maintain high expectations for behaviour, conduct, and attitudes towards learning.
- Encourage student autonomy, risk-taking, experimentation, resilience, and respect for materials and processes.
Examination and Coursework Oversight
- Manage students’ coursework portfolios, guided project work, and exam preparation in line with exam board requirements.
- Support and guide students in meeting deadlines, refining work, and preparing for external assessment.
- Liaise with exam boards, complete moderation and internal assessment, and ensure compliance with all policies.
Professional Development and Collaboration
- Participate in departmental meetings, CPD (Continuing Professional Development), peer observation, evaluation and self-review.
- Share effective practice and collaborate with colleagues to raise standards across the art department and school.
- Keep abreast of developments in art education, new techniques, digital tools, and relevant educational research.
- Display, Exhibition, and Promotion of Student Work
- Curate and manage displays throughout the school to showcase student work, celebrate achievement, and enhance school environment.
- Organize and coordinate school art exhibitions, open evenings, and community showcases.
- Foster links with local galleries, community groups, or artists to provide opportunities for students and raise the profile of the school’s art programme.
Safeguarding, Pastoral Duties, and Wider School Participation
- Maintain safe practices with tools, materials, and equipment; ensure Health & Safety guidelines are followed in art rooms and workshops.
- Act as a tutor or form teacher if required, supporting students’ pastoral, social, and emotional development.
- Engage in wider school life: attend staff meetings, parent evenings, contribute to school events, support whole-school initiatives and leadership aims.
