Purpose of the Role:
The Head of Computer Science will lead and manage the Computer Science department, ensuring high-quality teaching, strong student outcomes, and an engaging curriculum that prepares students for the digital world. Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Management:
The Head of Computer Science will provide strategic leadership for the department, driving continuous improvement and ensuring high standards of teaching, learning, and student achievement. They will monitor and evaluate departmental performance, identifying priorities and implementing effective improvement strategies. The post holder will be responsible for the effective management of departmental resources and budget, while supporting and developing staff through collaboration, coaching, and professional development opportunities. They will also ensure that all departmental practices comply with school policies, safeguarding requirements, and health and safety regulations.
Teaching and Learning:
The successful candidate will deliver high-quality teaching across relevant key stages and promote consistently strong teaching and learning throughout the department. They will monitor student progress and attainment, implementing appropriate strategies to raise achievement and support positive outcomes for all learners. The Head of Computer Science will work closely with colleagues to develop effective classroom practice and foster an inclusive learning environment where every student is encouraged and supported to reach their full potential.
Curriculum and Assessment:
The Head of Computer Science will lead the planning, delivery, and ongoing review of an ambitious and engaging Computer Science curriculum. They will ensure that schemes of work, assessment practices, and teaching resources meet curriculum requirements and examination specifications. Through the effective analysis of performance data, the post holder will identify areas for development and implement targeted interventions to improve outcomes. They will also promote the effective use of technology to enhance teaching, learning, and student engagement.
Student Enrichment:
The post holder will actively promote opportunities for students to develop their interest and skills beyond the classroom through enrichment activities such as coding clubs, competitions, and STEM initiatives. They will encourage students to explore pathways into further education, apprenticeships, and careers within computing, technology, and related industries.
Professional Responsibilities:
The Head of Computer Science will maintain up-to-date subject knowledge and remain informed about developments in Computer Science education and technology. They will contribute positively to the wider life of the school, participating in school events and activities as appropriate. • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
• Degree in Computer Science, Computing, Information Technology, or a related subject.
