SEN TA for Autism Provision - January start
Primary school in CamdenFull Time
11 Dec - Jul 19
We are looking for a Classroom Support Assistant (CSA) to work within Woodlands Centre for Autism for this academic year. Woodlands has 30 places for children aged 4 – 11 with Autism. Each classroom has one teacher and three to four Child Support Assistants, all trained and experienced in working with children with autism. Our ratio of adults : students is 1:2. We use a therapeutic approach with teachers and therapists working closely, including Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and a Music Therapist. We view all behaviour, including behaviour that challenges, as a form of communication and try to respond to challenges in an empathetic and ‘low arousal’ way. In the short term we aim to de-escalate and support students to feel better regulated. In the long term, we seek to understand why a child may be experiencing dysregulation and try to teach them better or more productive ways of getting their needs met. We expect CSAs to adhere to this and adopt our approach. This is an active role and much of the CSA’s day will be spent on their feet. Our students learn through play and we expect staff to enjoy and participate in games with our students and meet them where they are at. Some of our students are learning to use the toilet and/or may use nappies. Therefore, this role can involve personal care support. Students go swimming at the local pool once a week and we expect staff to enter the pool to support and supervise students (nb. The pool is shallow so all staff would be able to stand up in the pool) Ideally we want candidates to have experience working with young people including those with additional needs. We pride ourselves on using some of the best, evidence based practices and therapies within Woodlands Centre for Autism. We provide many opportunities for CPD and this is an interesting and fun role! It is ideal for those considering a career supporting young people with additional needs, for those with a sense of fun and those who enjoy spending time working with a team and working with young people.
