Responsible to: Head of Design and Technology / Senior Leadership Team
Job Purpose
We are seeking an enthusiastic, skilled and committed Food Technology Teacher to join our secondary school in Liverpool. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality teaching and learning across Key Stages 3 and 4, inspiring pupils to develop practical food preparation skills, nutritional knowledge, creativity and confidence.
The role requires a teacher who can create a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment, support pupils of all abilities, and contribute positively to the wider life of the school.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Plan, prepare and deliver engaging Food Technology lessons in line with the school curriculum.
- Teach Food Technology across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, including GCSE or vocational qualifications where required.
- Develop pupils’ practical cookery skills, knowledge of nutrition, food hygiene, food science and healthy eating.
- Use a range of teaching strategies to meet the needs of pupils with different abilities and learning styles.
- Set high expectations for pupil progress, behaviour and achievement.
- Mark and assess pupils’ work regularly, providing clear feedback to support improvement.
- Monitor pupil progress and use assessment data to inform planning and intervention.
Practical Classroom Management
- Ensure that all practical food lessons are delivered safely and effectively.
- Maintain high standards of hygiene, health and safety in food preparation areas.
- Manage ingredients, equipment and resources efficiently.
- Support pupils in developing safe and independent working practices.
- Ensure compliance with relevant school policies and food safety procedures.
Curriculum Development
- Contribute to the development and review of the Food Technology curriculum.
- Support the wider Design and Technology department in planning schemes of work and enrichment activities.
- Promote creativity, innovation and real-world applications of food education.
- Keep up to date with developments in food education, nutrition, assessment and teaching practice.
Pastoral and Wider School Responsibilities
- Support the school’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
- Build positive relationships with pupils, parents, carers and colleagues.
- Contribute to the pastoral care and personal development of pupils.
- Support school events, open evenings, enrichment opportunities and extracurricular activities where appropriate.

Person Specification
Essential
The successful candidate will:
- Hold Qualified Teacher Status or be working towards it.
- Have a relevant degree or qualification in Food Technology, Design and Technology, -Nutrition, Catering, Hospitality or a related subject.
- Have experience teaching Food Technology or a closely related subject at secondary level.
- Demonstrate strong subject knowledge and practical food preparation skills.
- Understand health, safety and hygiene requirements in a food teaching environment.
- Be able to plan and deliver engaging lessons that support pupil progress.
- Have excellent classroom management skills.
- Be committed to inclusion, equality and raising standards for all pupils.
- Communicate effectively with pupils, staff, parents and carers.
- Be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Desirable
- Experience teaching GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition or a relevant vocational qualification.
- Experience contributing to curriculum planning within Design and Technology.
- Food hygiene certification or willingness to undertake relevant training.
- Experience supporting pupils with SEND or additional learning needs.
- A willingness to contribute to enrichment activities, clubs or community events.
