Job Title: SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator)

Job Purpose
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated SENCO to lead and manage the provision for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) within our secondary school. The successful candidate will play a key strategic and operational role in ensuring that all students with SEND receive high-quality support, enabling them to achieve their academic and personal potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate the school’s SEND provision in line with statutory requirements and school policies.
- Identify, assess, and monitor students with SEND and maintain accurate records.
- Develop, implement, and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Work closely with teaching staff to provide guidance and strategies to support students with additional needs in the classroom.
- Line-manage and support Learning Support Assistants and other SEND staff.
- Liaise with parents/carers, external agencies, and professionals (e.g., educational psychologists, speech and language therapists).
- Oversee referrals, assessments, and annual reviews.
- Monitor the progress and attainment of students with SEND and report to senior leadership as required.
- Contribute to whole-school improvement planning and inclusion strategies.
- Deliver or arrange training for staff on SEND-related topics.
- Ensure safeguarding, equality, and inclusion policies are fully embedded.
- Manage the SEND budget and resources effectively (where applicable).
Person Specification
Essential Requirements:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- National Award for SEN Coordination (or willingness to work towards it if newly appointed).
- Experience teaching and supporting students with SEND at secondary school level.
- Strong knowledge of SEND legislation, guidance, and best practice.
- Experience working with EHCPs and external agencies.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
- Commitment to inclusive education and student wellbeing.
Desirable:
- Previous experience as a SENCO or in a senior SEND leadership role.
- Experience supporting students with a range of needs (e.g., ASD, ADHD, SEMH, dyslexia).
- Experience of staff line management.
- Knowledge of local authority procedures and frameworks.
