Job Summary
We are seeking a compassionate, adaptable, and proactive individual to join the team at Mayfield School, an all-through special school in Chorley that caters to pupils aged 2–19 with a wide range of complex needs. This rewarding role involves supporting learners from Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 5, many of whom have profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), physical disabilities, autism, ADHD, and associated communication and sensory processing needs.
All pupils have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), and most are working significantly below age-related expectations. You will play a vital part in helping each pupil make personal and meaningful progress, however small, within a highly supportive and structured environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide high-quality, person-centred support across a range of classrooms and age groups (KS1–KS5), responding flexibly to the needs of individual learners.
Work closely with class teachers, therapists, and support staff to implement tailored learning programmes that reflect pupils’ EHCPs and individual learning goals.
Support pupils with their personal care needs, including feeding, toileting, and mobility, where necessary (full training will be provided).
Encourage communication, independence, and engagement through a variety of strategies including visual aids, sensory play, Makaton, PECS, and AAC systems.
Promote a calm, positive, and inclusive classroom environment that supports social and emotional development alongside academic progress.
Monitor and report on individual progress and behaviour, celebrating achievements in line with school policies and each pupil’s unique journey.
Attend and contribute to staff meetings, training sessions, and multi-agency reviews where appropriate.
What We're Looking For
Experience working with children or young people with SEN is highly desirable but not essential – a caring attitude and willingness to learn are key.
Confidence in supporting children with complex needs, including behaviours that challenge, sensory impairments, or physical disabilities.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Resilience, patience, and a commitment to understanding the individual needs and progress markers for each pupil.
